Software Developer
London / hybrid · £42,000 per annum · Full time, permanent
VOL Group is hiring a Software Developer in London (hybrid) at £42,000 per annum. The role requires 2+ years' commercial experience with C# or .NET, JavaScript or TypeScript, SQL and REST APIs, working across the full development lifecycle in an Agile team.
Applications go to hr@volgroup.co.uk with a CV and a short covering note. Shortlisted candidates are invited to a technical and competency-based interview.
About the role
You will work alongside our technical lead, QA and design team on client projects — web applications, APIs, integrations and cloud-hosted systems. Because we are small, you will see the whole lifecycle rather than one narrow slice, and your design opinions will actually affect what gets built.
We care more about how you reason about trade-offs than how many frameworks you can name. If you like writing code that other people can safely change later, you will fit.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test and maintain enterprise software applications.
- Build scalable web applications, APIs, backend services and system integrations.
- Work across the full lifecycle, from requirements analysis to deployment and support.
- Translate business requirements and technical specifications into working solutions.
- Produce clean, secure, maintainable and documented code.
- Write unit tests and support system, integration and user acceptance testing.
- Take part in peer code review and technical design discussions.
- Diagnose defects, investigate production issues and implement fixes.
- Integrate third-party APIs and external systems.
- Support cloud-hosted applications, deployment processes and CI/CD pipelines.
- Maintain technical documentation and contribute to development standards.
- Work within Agile/Scrum — sprint planning, stand-ups, reviews and retrospectives.
Essential
- Commercial software development experience (2+ years or equivalent).
- Strong object-oriented programming and software design fundamentals.
- Several of: C#, .NET or ASP.NET Core, JavaScript or TypeScript, HTML5, CSS3.
- SQL Server or MySQL, and REST API design.
- Git, and familiarity with Azure or AWS.
- Unit testing and CI/CD exposure.
- Clear written and spoken communication.
Advantageous
- React, Angular or Blazor.
- Flutter or React Native.
- Docker or Kubernetes.
- Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions.
- Experience in travel, e-commerce or financial services.
How to apply
Send a CV and a short covering note explaining something you have built and one decision you would make differently now.
Questions about the role
Is the role hybrid or fully remote?
Hybrid. We expect regular time in London with the team — pairing, design sessions and review are markedly better in person — and flexibility the rest of the week. Fully remote does not suit how we work at this size.
Do you sponsor visas?
We consider applications from candidates with existing right to work in the UK. Please state your status in your covering note so we can respond honestly rather than waste your time.
What does the interview process look like?
An introductory call, then a technical and competency interview covering real problems rather than algorithm puzzles, and a conversation about how you approach design and trade-offs. We aim to complete it within two weeks and we give feedback either way.
I do not match every requirement. Should I apply?
Yes, if you match most of it and can show you learn quickly. The requirements list is a description of a strong candidate, not a checklist we score mechanically.
Not this role, but interested anyway?
We keep speculative applications on file and get in touch when something fits. Send a CV and tell us what you want to work on.
