A small consultancy that builds software properly
VOL Group was set up to do the kind of engineering its founder kept being asked to rescue: systems that were shipped quickly, documented badly, and became somebody else's problem. We build the other kind.
VOL Group is a software consultancy based in Kensington, West London. We build bespoke web applications, iOS and Android mobile apps, cloud platforms on Azure and AWS, CRM integrations and data and reporting systems for organisations across the UK and Europe.
The team is deliberately small and senior, with the deepest sector experience in travel technology. Our founder works day-to-day as a technical lead in UK travel, which is where the consultancy's emphasis on supportability and release discipline comes from.
Most software problems are not technology problems
They are scoping problems, handover problems and maintenance problems. A system fails not because the wrong framework was chosen, but because nobody wrote down why it was built that way, no test suite protects it, and the one person who understood it left.
So the things we insist on are unglamorous: written scope before code, decisions recorded, tests on the parts that carry risk, automated deployment, and documentation as a deliverable rather than a favour.
We write things down
Scope, architecture decisions, runbooks, handover notes. If the knowledge only exists in a developer's head, you do not really own the system.
We scope before we sell
A paid discovery that concludes the project should be smaller, or should not happen, is a good outcome. We would rather lose the revenue than deliver something you regret.
We build for handover
Your IP, your repositories, mainstream technology, no proprietary framework. Leaving should always be possible.
We say the unwelcome thing
If a deadline is not achievable, a technology choice is wrong, or a requirement will cause problems later, you will hear it early and in writing.
Who you will actually work with

UI/UX DesignerRamalingheswara leads interface and experience design — user flows, wireframes, prototypes and the design system that keeps a build visually consistent. Involved from the first sprint alongside the engineers, rather than handing over static screens.
How we contract
Discovery is paid and fixed-price
Two to three weeks, a fixed fee, and a written output — scope, architecture, risks and estimate. You own the document whether or not you proceed to build.
Build is sprint-based with a cap
Two-week sprints, a capped budget, and a monthly review where you can stop, change direction or extend. Fixed-price for genuinely bounded work.
IP transfers to you
Assignment of intellectual property is standard in our contract. Repositories, pipelines and documentation are handed over on completion.

How big is the team?
We are deliberately small and senior in London, with a wider engineering bench for build capacity. That means the people who scope your work are involved in delivering it. It also means we turn down work we cannot staff properly — which we would rather do than subcontract it quietly.
